Then, one day, her life is turned upside down when she gets a visit from the Marine Corps. She finds herself losing a husband but awakening a long-gone side of herself she never thought she would see again. Is she being disrespectful to the memory of her recently dead husband or is she finally being true to who she really is?
Can these two women come to terms with the past and finally find happiness, or will their shared sense of honor keep them apart?

The story begins with the main characters Nic and Claire dealing with trauma. Nic has been recuperating after her helo crashes in Iraq. In her new stateside assignment, she has to inform Claire of the death of her husband. A man that Nic had known at flight school. It was touching how Nic went to Dover to bring his body home. The reader could feel the honor and respect of a good Marine.The setting is before Don’t Ask Don’t Tell had fallen which plays into the twist that I will not spoil for you. While I guessed the twist with Claire, the emotions written in this book made me fall in love with the characters, grief with them, and root for their joy.
Finally, all good stories have strong secondary characters. I loved Father O’Reilly.

This book points out so many things...a war & a rule that were oh so wrong...and a love that was so very right! I read this after the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell", DOMA and Prop. 8. It is a sweet story emerging from lies and loss. What a wonderful way to celebrate these victories over inequality then with a story of what was, read during a time of what should always have been and what really is! At last...
I thought this book was a wonderful story I think when I read a story about lesbian in the military it makes me route harder for them cause they deserve happiness like everyone else and with the carp of don't ask don't tell makes that a challenge even with it gone today I still think that for a lot of soldiers they still keep there personal life hidden happy endings are always great
I really enjoyed this story. I love reading about tough women who are really just trying to hide their softer warmer sides until a wonderful woman brings it out. My only complaint would be that I wish it was longer. I wanted to know so much more about Nic and Claire and their life after the military. I hope that there is a longer and more in depth book in the works for these two!
I was looking for some new authors and found this one based on reviews - I was pleasantly surprised!! I love a good story dressed up in military blues <smile> and this author wrote this story with great description and understanding (too bad it was written before 'don't ask don't tell was reversed). Both the main and secondary characters had good depth to them and though the main characters did come together under unfortunate reasons(a bit too close to the reality of today), the story was well written and brought the reader into the lives with ease. I look forward to more from this author!
I have been looking at this book for months now and finally decided to purchase it. I was skeptical because of the cover. It looked "cheesy" to me. However, the book was very enjoyable. Great slow angsty romance with interesting main characters! Enjoyed this book very much. Will ready more from this author!
This is a story a lot of us should read just to remind us what happens when the troops don't come home the way they left. I will admit that I needed the tissues a couple of time during the reading of this book.
It will have you wanting to read every page as small things can become big things in seconds but nothing can stop love. This is a very moving story on many levels and will keep you wanting to read to the very last page.
On another note there was gross grammar and editing errors that made some of the reading not so enjoyable.
I read Forever Faithful, the second book in this series first and loved it. I ordered this book so I could find out how Claire and Nic met and fell in love and I was not disappointed. This was a wonderful story. I never really considered everything that military families go through, especially after they lose someone in battle. It was very informative about military lifestyles. I loved the way the two women connected and found love. I definitely recommend it. Can't wait to read the third book.
